The influence of a government if felt right from the village to the national level. These governments, however, fall in different types. The most commonly known are: Democratic, constitutional, monarchial, dictatorship, federal systems, and unitary state governments. This essay seeks to elaborate the system of governance, with specific focus on the three branches of a federal government.According to Teacher Law (2013), a federal government is one that allows the distribution of powers of the government between the federal (national) government and the federation (also known as local or state) governments. Within the federal systems, each level has sovereign powers in some given areas, for example, being able to levy taxes. In some areas, however, powers are shared. It is notable that in a s much as some powers are shared, making decisions such as declaration of war or state of emergency are solely done by the federal government. For effective functionality of the federal government and to ensure checks and balances, its leadership is further devolved into three distinct branches notably: The Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary.The legislature is majorly made up of two congress houses i.e. The House of Representatives and the Senate House. Apparently, the members of the two houses are directly elected by the people. Whereas the members of the House of Representatives represent the interest of the people, the Senate members represent the interests of their various states. Hines (2012) asserts that the fact that the members of the two houses are directly elected by the people demonstrate the sovereignty of the citizens over the government by placing their direct representatives at the center of federal power. By having two senators from each state and at least one rep resentative from each congressional district, the political powers rest in the hands of the common citizen.The executive wing of the government basically entails the presidency. In the words of Hines (2012), the president is a dynamic officer, known as the commander-in-chief, and sits at the pick of the chain of command. The president is thus responsible for conducting the federal governments national foreign policies, either through treaties or at his personal level. He further ensure the coordination of the government activities by nominating personnel to Executive branches as well as the federal judges.
